How to Design the Perfect Living Room Media Unit: A Case Study

media unit next to fire place

Our client in West Sussex wanted a media unit for their living room to incorporate all their electrical points, books, vinyl and CDs. They also wanted under-storage cupboards and built-in lighting.

Designing the living room media unit

The living room had a fireplace on one side and an existing socket on the other which couldn’t be moved, therefore a straight run of cupboards below was not possible. So I suggested a sweeping worktop design. The client loved the idea of a sweeping worktop. This design allowed the cupboards below to be made so that the socket was hidden on one end and the cupboard would be setback from the front of the fireplace.

The design of the media unit was drawn to scale on the living room wall to allow the clients to visualise and decide where everything will fit. This also gives me the ability to get accurate measurements for all the units that need to be built.

I worked with the client's electrician to work the lighting into the design of the shelving and we used inset LED spot lights.
