Choosing hardware for your bespoke furniture

Satin nickel door handles on blue wardrobe

The hardware for your wardrobe or cabinetry is the finishing touch to your furniture and can really help to complete a room. When we say hardware, we are referring the the handles and knobs that are fitted to your furniture once it's been built. In this article we discuss your hardware options which should help you in the decision process.

We always recommend that you go for quality hardware as the handles will be used regularly. Good quality handles add to the experience with a comfortable grip, smooth edges, and smart shape. Poor quality handles can hinder this experience and also speed up the wear and tear of your cupboards, so it's important to choose a strong and durable material. We use Plank Hardware as they offer high quality products that are also functional and on trend. Their hardware comes in a range of styles, sizes and colours. The amount of choice can sometimes be daunting but we are here to help you decide with our tips and suggestions below.

Wardrobe with Quality Hardware

Here is one of our bespoke projects for a client in Wickham, Hampshire. We designed, built & installed these fitted wardrobes with shaker style doors and a smooth spray-paint finish. The client completed the look with the 'Pearce Polygon Range' of hardware with a T-bar handle in a satin nickel finish. These compliment the style and colour of the doors. The handles have a polygon shaped grip which is comfortable to hold and also easy to clean.

Styles

The four main style to choose from are T-bar handles, button knobs, D-bar handles, and pull handles as below. T-bar handles and D-bar handles are recommended for large wardrobe doors, and the button and pull handles are great for cupboard doors and drawers. We recommend choosing a handle that compliments the door style and door colour and is also comfortable to grip with a smart shape.

Finish

The handles come in a range of finishes. It's best to match the finish to your door style and colour. Cool colours such as white, light blue or grey finishes look great with stainless steel or satin nickel hardware. Warm colours such as pinks, mustards, terracotta or a navy blue, compliment a brass or antique brass finish. You can take inspiration from Pinterest, social media or interior design magazines.

Size

Handles come in different lengths and diameters. The length you choose is determined by the height of the door - the longer the door, the longer the handle. The diameter of the knobs should ideally be matched to the scale of the door, and is partly personal preference.
